The Faculty of Arts holds a seminar on the rights of people with special needs in cinema

The Human Rights Unit, in cooperation with the Human Rights Committee at the College of Fine Arts, organized a symposium on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, entitled “Rights of People with Special Needs in Cinema”, moderated by Dr. Nabil Wadai and lecturer Aghareed Mahmoud, as part of the efforts made to raise awareness of the rights of this group and their role in the cinematic scene.
Symposium topics:
1. Representation of people with special needs in Arab and international cinema and discussing how to portray them in films, and the prevailing patterns between stereotyping and realistic presentation.
2. The role of cinema in raising awareness of the rights of people with special needs and reviewing cinematic models that contribute to changing the societal view and enhancing the integration of this group into society.
Symposium objectives:
The symposium highlighted the importance of presenting a fair and humane image of people with special needs in cinematic works and discussing the ethical and professional standards that filmmakers must adhere to when addressing these issues, in addition to enhancing the role of cinema as a tool to empower people with special needs and raise awareness of their rights.
Target group: The symposium targeted specialists in the field of cinema and art, those interested in human rights issues, and students and researchers in fine arts and media, as it provided an opportunity for dialogue and exchange of ideas on ways to improve the representation of this group in cinema.
