The Department of Art Education, in cooperation with the Scientific Affairs Division at the College of Fine Arts, University of Diyala, held a workshop entitled “Directing Style in Monodrama Theater”

The workshop, which was managed and discussed by Assistant Lecturer

Taha Abdul Wahab Abdullah, emphasized that it is a theatrical form that relies on only one actor performing all roles or narrating the story alone, which imposes distinct directing challenges and opportunities.

The workshop included the directing style used in monodrama theater and how to employ the theatrical space due to the absence of other actors in this type of theater. This requires the director to use visual design intelligently through the movement of the actor around the theater to avoid monotony, and to exploit lighting and shadows to suggest the presence of different characters or places, in addition to the fact that lighting closes the gap of the absence of other characters, while creating different atmospheres such as dim light for the internal monologue, strong light for moments of tension, with multiple times and places specified in the story without the need to change the decor. This requires distinct philosophical capabilities and characteristics that the director must have in this type of theater.

The workshop aimed to introduce symbolism and abstraction to create an influential theatrical experience in which the director uses multiple techniques to maintain audience engagement and ensure that the show does not lose its appeal despite being based on an individual performance.
