The workshop was lectured by Professor Dr. Jalil Wadi, a lecturer at the college. The lecturer discussed the concept of media education, which aims to understand the public’s understanding of the mechanism of the media, both traditional and new, and how it affects our lives, and the way to deal with the media in a wise and positive manner, pointing out the stages that this concept went through. The lecturer touched on the objectives of media education, which are to educate and train children and students on how to deal with media content, work to avoid the negative effects of media messages, benefit from their positive aspects, free children from being dazzled by communication technology, make them positive in interacting with media messages, and avoid easy exposure to those messages, and be more aware and responsible in selecting the products of the media process. The lecture discussed the use of new media by young people, especially social networking sites, stressing the prevalence of random use of these sites, which exposes young people to great risks, which necessitates taking appropriate measures to address this use. The lecture concluded with a call for the Ministries of Education and Higher Education to coordinate in order to adopt a curriculum on media education to be taught at various educational levels. The lecture, which was attended by Professor Dr. Alaa Shaker Mahmoud, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Assistant Professor Hussein Muhammad Ali, Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, and some of the faculty’s instructors and affiliates, in addition to a group of the faculty’s students, raised a number of important ideas and questions raised by the attendees, which enriched the lecture and its subject.
